Most visitors staying under 2 weeks can skip Zalo, but anyone living in Vietnam for 1 month or longer should install it, because landlords, drivers and small shops reply there first. Sign-up takes 5 steps and a phone number.
What is Zalo and why does everyone in Vietnam use it?
Zalo is a Vietnamese messaging app built by the tech company VNG, and it is the default chat app for most locals. It does what WhatsApp or Viber does: text, voice notes, file sharing, free voice and video calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data. It is little known outside the country. That is why newcomers are surprised when a landlord’s first question is “What’s your Zalo?”
Many small businesses run on it. A hotel, a shop or a restaurant often takes questions and bookings through Zalo and has no website at all. Some government offices and banks also publish announcements and support through the app.
Do you actually need Zalo as a foreigner?
You need it only if you stay long or deal with local people directly. For a holiday, WhatsApp and Messenger are enough: people who work with foreign visitors almost always have one of them, so booking a hotel, a tour or a transfer works without Zalo.

For a stay of a month or more, I would install it on day one. It costs nothing and the install is quick. It also removes the situation where a driver or an agent cannot reach you and you cannot reach them.
Who will ask for your Zalo when you live here?
Expect the request from the people who keep your daily life running: landlords, property agents, private drivers, homestay owners, small tour operators and Vietnamese friends. They use Zalo because everyone around them already has it, and for locals it feels more personal and more trusted than Messenger.

Property agents are the clearest case. If you are hunting for a flat, you will send photos and viewing times back and forth on Zalo, and many agents send the viewing details only there. A viewing time that sits unread in your Zalo is a viewing you miss, so open the thread before you ask the agent to repeat it elsewhere. I cover the full search in the guide to renting long term in Vietnam and the list of agents and Facebook groups.
How do you sign up for Zalo as a foreigner?
Registration takes 5 steps, and you need only the phone and a number that can receive an SMS:
- Download Zalo from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Sign up with your phone number. An international number works, but a Vietnamese SIM makes it easier to connect with locals.
- Enter the verification code that arrives by SMS or in the app.
- Set up your profile with a name, a photo and an optional bio.
- Add contacts by phone number or by scanning their Zalo QR code, then adjust privacy settings to limit messages from unknown people.
The QR code is the fastest way to add someone in person. A driver or a landlord can show their code on the phone and you scan it, so nobody types a number.
Can you register without a Vietnamese number?
Yes, an international number is accepted, and one phone number can hold only one Zalo account. Vietnam’s Decree 147/2024, in force since 25 December 2024, makes online platforms verify user accounts with a subscriber phone number. For foreigners without a Vietnamese number it allows verification through an electronic ID account, a separate Vietnamese system that you do not need just to install a chat app. In practice, a Vietnamese SIM in your own name is the simpler base for the account.
A SIM and a Zalo account are both tied to your passport, and your stay is tied to the stamp or e‑visa in it. You can count the days yourself from the stamp, but the extension or visa-run date is the one people miss, not the app setup. Ask me on WhatsApp what your stamp allows and I will say when you need to act.
If you have not bought one yet, our notes on topping up a Vietnamese SIM from abroad and keeping a Russian number alive cover the SIM side. Skip free SMS-receiving websites and virtual numbers: the number is shared and the account is lost when it changes hands.
What else is Zalo good for besides chatting?
Beyond chat, Zalo has groups, business accounts and a payment wallet, and most of these matter only if you settle here. Groups work like neighborhood boards: buildings, expat communities and interest groups run on them, and that is where tips, recommendations and local updates appear. My pick among them is the building group, because notices that touch your daily routine show up there before anywhere else. Business accounts let shops and clinics answer questions and take bookings.

Zalo Pay, the built-in payment service, is not useful for most newcomers. Cash and bank transfers remain the main way to pay, and for a wallet that foreigners can actually fund I would look at MoMo first.
What should you set up first?
Install Zalo, keep WhatsApp for foreign contacts, and do the sign-up before you need it. A landlord waiting for your answer is a bad moment to start. Save your landlord and your driver as contacts, and turn on the privacy limits for strangers.

Zalo takes minutes to set up, and you can count your visa days from the stamp or the e‑visa yourself. A visa that expires is less forgiving: overstaying brings a fine at departure and questions at your next entry, and a missed date is easy to prevent. Send your entry date on WhatsApp and I will check how long you can stay and when you have to extend or leave.
Frequently asked questions
Is Zalo available in English?
Yes. Open the settings, find Language & Text Size, choose Change Language and pick English. Messages from locals will still arrive in Vietnamese, so a translation app on the same phone helps.
Can I use Zalo on a laptop?
Yes. Zalo has a desktop app and a web version. On the login screen choose the QR code option, then scan the code with the Zalo app on your phone.
What happens to my Zalo account if I lose my SIM or change my number?
The verification code goes to the number on the account, so a lost SIM blocks the login. The first fix is a replacement SIM with the same number from the operator’s shop, where you show your passport. If that is impossible, Zalo support can check that you own the account and restore access.
Is it safe to register Zalo with a virtual or free SMS number?
I would not. Public receive-SMS numbers are shared, so someone else can request the same code later, and you lose the account if the number changes hands. Use your own SIM.
