Da Nang works as a winter base from January to March: the rain drops from about 370 mm in November to about 30 mm in February, and the sea stays at 23-24 °C. A visa-free entry lasts 45 days, a 90-day e‑visa costs $25 for one entry or $50 for multiple entries, and a studio rents for about $270-850 a month depending on how close it is to My Khe beach.

Winter plans in Da Nang usually break in the same two places: the rain comes first, the visa second.

When does the rain stop in Da Nang and is winter warm enough for the beach?

Rain eases through December and the dry window runs from January to March. Long-term climate averages give 367 mm in November, 210 mm in December, 96 mm in January and only 32-33 mm in February and March. Daytime highs sit at 24-27 °C, so the beach works, but the sea is cool at 23-24 °C from December to March.

The figures come from one long-term climate table (Weather2Travel), so treat the rain column as an order of magnitude. WeatherSpark confirms the cool season runs from late November to late February and puts January as the coldest month. Travel media put the end of the typhoon window around 10 December, which I could not confirm with the national weather service, so check the forecast before you book a flight in November.

How much does a winter month of rent cost in Da Nang?

A studio in An Thuong costs about 7-10 million dong a month ($270-385), and a one-bedroom there about 9-14 million ($345-540). The front line at My Khe beach is the top of the market, with studios at 12-22 million ($460-850).

Three-bedroom villa26-28 million dongup to 65 million dong

These are asking prices from listings in September 2026, and signed deals may land at a different number. English-language portals often show foreigner prices about twice as high as the same flat on a Vietnamese site: one-bedrooms at 10-18 million dong against 8-9 million. Ask for the price in dong, and look at Vietnamese platforms before you sign.

A common deal is one month of deposit plus the first month in advance. Utilities add roughly 0.7-2.5 million dong a month, and electricity is the biggest part because air conditioning is expensive; one expat reports $32 in a cool month and $60-100 in the heat. Home fibre internet costs 190-255 thousand dong a month, about $8-10. My guide to renting an apartment in Da Nang walks through the viewing and contract steps.

How much does a month in Da Nang cost in total?

One person spends about $800-1,600 a month, depending on the lifestyle. A published budget with rent in An Thuong, a rented scooter and minimal insurance comes to $870 a month. A scooter rental costs 1-2.5 million dong a month, and a lunch at a local place 40-70 thousand dong. The cost of living in Da Nang breakdown splits the budget by lifestyle tier.

If you work remotely, the city has about 52 coworking spaces. A day pass costs about $5 and a monthly desk $50-150, and Enouvo Space is a frequent pick among nomads. Reviews give an average home internet speed of about 100 Mbps and 250-500 Mbps in coworking spaces, which are figures from review sites rather than a speed test, so try a day pass before you pay for a month.

Is the 45-day visa-free stay enough for a winter in Da Nang?

No. A visa-free entry gives 45 days counted from the day of arrival, under Resolution 44/NQ-CP, valid from 15 March 2025 to 14 March 2028 for citizens of 12 countries, Russia among them. A winter of three to five months needs the 90-day e‑visa from evisa.gov.vn, at $25 for a single entry or $50 for multiple entries, with a decision in about three working days.

An e‑visa cannot be extended inside Vietnam. For anything past 90 days you leave and re-enter, so a five-month winter means two e-visas and one border trip. Guides report no annual cap and no required gap between visa-free entries, but the border officer decides each time and may ask about your plans, so I would not build a winter on a chain of 45-day entries.

The portal is where applications stall: cards from some banks are declined, and a wrong port of entry on the form can sink the whole application.

How does a visa run from Da Nang to Laos work?

A visa run from Da Nang is a one-day road trip to the Lao Bao crossing in Quang Tri province, which faces Dansavanh on the Lao side. It is about 245 km, around six hours by bus with stops and a little over four hours by private car. A longer route runs to Savannakhet, about 480 km and roughly 10 hours including the border, which is an overnight trip rather than a day trip. Russian passport holders enter Laos visa-free for up to 30 days, according to two entry guides, and you come back on a new 45-day visa-free entry or a multiple-entry e‑visa. A single-entry e‑visa is used up the moment you leave Vietnam.

A wet mountain road with a coach ahead: a visa run from Da Nang to Laos takes a full day

Expect small fees on the Lao side, reported at about 20 baht plus roughly $1 outside office hours. The border hours also vary, so read the Lao Bao border hours guide before you plan the day, because arriving late means overtime charges.

You can take a public bus to Lao Bao yourself. Six hours of road each way plus the border queue is the part people dislike, though. At BestBus Vietnam we pick you up in Da Nang, take you through the border and bring you back the same day with the stamp; the visa run from Da Nang page lists what the day includes. Tell me your visa end date on WhatsApp and I will say which day to plan the trip for.

How do you plan a winter in Da Nang around Tet 2027?

Plan the winter around two dates: the end of your visa and Tet, which falls on Saturday, 6 February 2027, with the eve on 5 February.

  1. Pick the arrival month. Late December gives you most of the dry season. November brings the most rain, so it is a month for viewing flats under a grey sky rather than lying on the beach.
  2. Apply for the 90-day e‑visa on evisa.gov.vn two to three weeks before the flight.
  3. Book two to four weeks in a hotel or short rental, then view flats in person and check noise and water pressure.
  4. Sign a lease before Tet. The government is still deciding the official holiday, and a draft proposes 4-10 February 2027, so I would assume shops and many services close for most of that week.
  5. Book domestic flights and buses for the Tet period one to two months ahead. In previous years domestic fares roughly doubled, and Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang return cost 5-5.9 million dong (about $196-232) in 2025.
  6. Decide before day 80 whether to leave on a border trip and re-enter, or fly home.

I found no hard numbers on how much Da Nang rents rise before Tet, so ask landlords directly.

Is Da Nang the right winter base for you?

Da Nang suits a winter of three to five months if you accept a wet November and plan for two visas.

You can fill in the e‑visa form yourself on evisa.gov.vn in an evening, and you can look for a flat after you land. The visa has to be settled before the flight, though, since a refused application a week out leaves no time to refile. Send me your arrival date and I will tell you how to cover your visa for the whole winter.
