For a stay of three months or more, South Long Beach is the easiest base and Ong Lang is the quiet alternative. Long Beach is about 12 minutes from the airport, while Ong Lang suits remote work and needs a scooter.
The choice matters more here than on a holiday, because you will shop, work and get to a doctor from the same spot every week.
Which Phu Quoc area fits a stay of three months or more?
South Long Beach fits most people and Ong Lang fits those who want quiet; judge any area by three distances: to the airport, to daily shopping and to the sea. A tourist is happy with a beach hotel, but a resident needs groceries without a scooter and a road that still works after rain.
The island’s life sits along the west coast. Dry season runs roughly from November or December to April, and rain falls from May to October. That decides which side of the island has calm water, so check the month before you choose.
What does rent cost on Phu Quoc?
Plan for the upper end, $400-700 a month for a one-bedroom apartment per Expat.com, until you have seen real listings. Sources disagree by a factor of three, since Nomads.com lists $232.
Villas run about $800-1,500 and a basic local house $130-300 a month. Negotiate after a viewing and ask for a three-month contract first, so you see the true price.
East coast: Bai Sao, Khem and Duong To
In the wet season the east coast has calmer water, which is why summer arrivals often choose Khem. In the dry season Khem can get waves, so the picture flips. If I land in the middle of the rains I pick Khem for the calm water, and once the dry season starts I move west.

Supermarkets are thin here, and delivery to houses off the main road is slow. Duong To works if you want to be near the centre without hearing it.
Ong Lang: quiet west coast
Ong Lang is for people who work from home and want silence: small villas, fishing bays and sunsets. A taxi from Duong Dong costs about 150,000-220,000 dong ($6-9), so a scooter is practically required. I prefer it to Long Beach for a working week, since fishing bays give a silence that no resort strip can.

Scooter rental prices are in our guide to Phu Quoc motorbike rental.
Duong Dong: the town with a market and services
Duong Dong is the island’s town, with the night market, banks, pharmacies and repair shops. Live here if you want errands done in ten minutes by scooter.

The immigration office is also here, on 30 Thang 4 street, which matters if you plan to extend your stay. The trade-off is that the beach is a short ride away and the market is loud in the morning. I always check a flat near the market at dawn, because a place that is quiet at noon is not the one you sleep in.
Quiet villages: Cua Can, Ganh Dau and Ham Ninh
They fit a second stay better than a first: these are fishing villages with seafood and few services. You can live there, but without a scooter you are tied to one place and the airport and hospital are further away than from Long Beach.

Is South Long Beach the easy choice?
Yes, if you want a quick airport run and ordinary shops. The airport is about 12 minutes away, Ham Ninh about 19 and Duong Dong about 20.

Long Beach has a real beach, cafes and supermarkets alongside the resorts. In the wet season the west coast gets waves and swimming is patchy. Central Long Beach is busier, and the section south of Cua Lap is calmer, which is where I would look first.
What visa do you need to stay over 45 days?
Russian citizens enter visa-free for 45 days under a regime valid until 14 March 2028. For longer, apply for an e‑visa at evisa.gov.vn: up to 90 days, $25 single entry or $50 multiple entry, processing about 3 working days. Cross-check terms on xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn.
The usual trouble is a portal that rejects the card or an application refused days before departure. If that happens, message me on WhatsApp with your entry date and application number. At BestBus Vietnam our 90-day e‑visa service covers the full process, and the options for a visa run from the island are in Phu Quoc visa run, three real options.
Which area should you pick for the first three months?
Choose South Long Beach if convenience matters most and Ong Lang if you want quiet. Duong Dong suits people who want services on the doorstep, and Khem or Duong To fit those who already have a scooter and island experience.
Start with a one-month rental in Long Beach, check the road to the shops and the internet, then sign for the season. An area is easy to change after a month; a year’s deposit is not.
You can handle housing yourself: view in person, haggle and test the speed. Nobody will count your stamp days for you, though. Send me your entry date on WhatsApp and I will work out when you need the e‑visa so the stay does not end on an expired stamp.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the flight to Phu Quoc from the mainland?
About 50 minutes from Saigon, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes from Da Nang and about 2 hours 10 minutes from Hanoi. A ferry from Ha Tien takes 1 to 1.5 hours and can be moved by bad weather.
Is there a proper hospital on the island?
Vinmec Phu Quoc runs a 24-hour emergency department. For chronic conditions and serious tests many residents still fly to the mainland, so pick insurance that covers evacuation.
Is the internet fast enough for remote work?
Nomads.com lists an average of about 39 Mbps. That works for calls and documents, but quiet areas such as Khem can be weaker at single houses, so run a speed test during the viewing.
