Vietnam Visa-Free vs E-Visa 90 Days: 2026 Guide
Most Russians arriving in Vietnam don’t need a visa at all. But the details trip people up — and a miscalculation at the border means fines that have gotten considerably steeper since late 2025.
Here’s what the two options actually cover, when each one makes sense, and the payment problem Russians consistently hit.
Do Russians Need a Visa for Vietnam?
No — for stays up to 45 days. Russia is on Vietnam’s unilateral visa-free list. You land, show a valid passport at immigration, get a stamp, and you’re done. No application, no fee, no invitation letter.
The arrangement is extended through March 14, 2028, so planning around it is safe for the foreseeable future.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Vietnam — not from when your flight leaves Russia. A passport expiring 5 months and 25 days after your arrival date will get you turned away at the checkpoint.
How the 45-Day Visa-Free Actually Works
The 45 days are calendar days, including both arrival and departure.
Land on March 1 — your last legal day is April 14, not April 15. The border officer stamps the exact exit date into your passport. Trust that stamp, not your own math. Every year, travelers miscalculate by one day and end up with overstay fines.
There is no mandatory waiting period between visa-free entries. Leave Vietnam and come back the same day — the 45-day count resets with each new entry stamp.
When an E-Visa Is Worth the $25
If 45 days isn’t enough, Vietnam’s e-visa gives you up to 90 days. Two options:

The e-visa must be applied for before you enter Vietnam — there’s no way to get one from inside the country or extend it after arrival. The entry point you write on the application must match where you actually cross.
Who should get it: long-stay travelers, digital nomads who want a 2-3 month window, or anyone doing multiple entries on a fixed itinerary without wanting to count days.
The Card Problem Russian Travelers Hit
This is where most Russians get stuck: Mir cards and UnionPay are not accepted on evisa.gov.vn.
You need a foreign-issued Visa or Mastercard. Banks from Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Georgia all work. If you don’t have one:
- Ask someone abroad to pay through their account
- Use a visa agent in Russia (adds roughly $20-40 but eliminates the card issue and form errors)
If applying yourself, transcribe your name exactly as it appears in your international passport — including middle name if listed. Any mismatch triggers a rejection without a refund.
What Happens If You Overstay
Vietnam tightened its rules significantly on December 15, 2025, under Decree 282/2025/NĐ-CP.
Even one day over your stamp date is recorded in the system. Fines range from 500,000 to 40,000,000 VND ($20 to $1,600 USD). Overstays of 16 days or more can result in deportation. You pay at the border exit — without paying, you don’t leave.
There’s no quiet exit. The entry date is logged with your stamp, and any discrepancy shows up automatically.
Visa Run: The Legal Reset Option
If your 45 days run out and you’re not ready to leave permanently, a visa run Da Nang is the standard solution. A short trip to Cambodia, Laos, or Thailand — then return immediately — resets your stay with a new 45-day stamp.
No minimum time outside Vietnam is required by law. From Da Nang, the Laos border takes about 6 hours by bus. From Ho Chi Minh City, Cambodia is 3 hours.
It’s legal and widely used, but conditions vary by crossing and day of the week.

For most travelers: the visa-free 45 days is enough. Check your passport expiry, note the date on your entry stamp, and you’re set.
