The Vietnam immigration offices in Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi extend sponsored visas, settle overstays and issue replacement paperwork after a lost passport, but none of them issues a first e‑visa. Hanoi’s national office also moved in June 2026, so the Tran Phu address printed in most online guides no longer works. Below are the current addresses, hours and limits of each office.
I run visa runs and e‑visa paperwork out of Da Nang, and questions about what the immigration office will and will not do reach me every week. The details come from Ministry of Public Security pages, the US Embassy’s Vietnam visa guidance and the official e‑visa portal.
What can you actually do at a Vietnam immigration office?
In person you can file an extension or a status change for sponsored visas, meaning business, work, investor and family categories, settle an overstay, and collect replacement paperwork after a lost passport. The office also handles residence-card procedures that a sponsoring employer or family member files. It does not issue first-time e-visas, and it does not register where you sleep.

You file at the counter of the office in the city where you live, or online through the National Public Service Portal. Online filing still requires you to post the original passport. The US Embassy states that foreigners must appear in person at the competent office where they reside to extend, renew or resolve an overstay, and that the embassy cannot intervene.
Where is the Vietnam immigration office in Hanoi in 2026?
Since 1 June 2026 the national Immigration Department works at 69 Mac Thai To, Yen Hoa ward, Hanoi, entrance gate 1. The public reception desk is at gate 2 on Nguyen Quoc Tri street. The Ministry of Public Security announced the move in a notice dated 29 May 2026.
The old address at 44-46 Tran Phu in Ba Dinh kept a parallel desk only until 15 June 2026, so agency pages and older blog posts still send visitors to a building that no longer serves them. The US Embassy page lists the office phone as 024 3825-7941 and the email as contact@immigration.gov.vn, which is the quickest check before you travel. Under the ministry’s procedure card, the national offices accept dossiers from Monday to Saturday morning and return results from Monday to Friday.
Where is the Da Nang immigration office and when is it open?
The Da Nang office is the Immigration Management Office of the city police, at 78 Le Loi, Hai Chau district. The US Embassy names it as the office handling visa and residence matters for foreigners living in Central Vietnam. Published hours are Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 11:30 and from 13:30 to 16:00, plus Saturday morning until 11:30.

No official 2026 page confirms those hours, and some listings give a 16:30 closing time, so I would arrive before 15:30. Da Nang merged with Quang Nam in 2025, and I found no police notice about a move of the office, but the embassy page lists two local phone numbers and a call before a long ride costs nothing.
Where is the immigration office in Ho Chi Minh City?
Ho Chi Minh City has two bodies. The city police Immigration Management Office is at 196 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, now in Xuan Hoa ward after the 2025 ward mergers and formerly Ward 6 in District 3. The national Immigration Department keeps a branch at 333-335-337 Nguyen Trai in District 1, and the US Embassy says local offices may escalate cases to the national offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The official city portal lists hours from 07:00 to 11:30 and from 13:30 to 17:00, Monday to Friday, plus Saturday morning until 11:30. Some agency pages quote 08:00 to 16:00, so treat the portal as the reference. Ignore the 254 Nguyen Trai address still printed on some consulate pages, because it is stale.
How do you extend a visa at the immigration office?
The official procedure takes no more than 5 working days from a complete dossier and costs $10 per extension under Circular 25/2021/TT-BTC, according to the ministry’s procedure card. You need your original passport and form NA5, and your visa category must allow extensions.

- Check that your visa is a sponsored category. A standard tourist e‑visa is not one, and no official page describes an extension procedure for it.
- Fill in form NA5 from Circular 22/2023/TT-BCA, on paper or on the online portal.
- File at the immigration office in the city where you live, or online through dichvucong.bocongan.gov.vn, and post the original passport if you file online.
- Pay the fee listed on the procedure card, at the counter or through the portal.
- Collect the passport with the new stamp within the working-day limit, Monday to Friday.
Visa-service sites add that the passport should have 6 months of validity and two blank pages. The official card lists only the passport and form NA5, so ask at the counter about photos.
What can’t you do at the immigration office?
You cannot get a first e‑visa there. The official evisa.gov.vn FAQ says e-visas are issued to foreigners who want to enter Vietnam, not to those already living in the country, so you leave and apply again after exit. An e‑visa lasts at most 90 days and costs $25 for one entry or $50 for multiple entries.

Accommodation registration also sits outside the counter. Your hotel or landlord declares you to the local police and repeats the declaration every time you change address. A residence card needs a sponsor such as an employer or a Vietnamese spouse, so a visitor without one has nothing to file. My guide on extending without leaving the country covers the options for a tourist e‑visa.
This is the point where most messages reach me: the e‑visa is about to run out, the office cannot replace it, and the portal sometimes refuses a foreign card at payment. You can do the exit and the new application yourself with a translator app and some patience. With BestBus Vietnam I file the e‑visa with a card the portal accepts and book the border trip, so the new visa and the exit happen in one day. All I need from you is the expiry date of your current visa and the city you will fly into.
What if you lose your passport or overstay?
Start with a police report from the district where the loss happened, because the immigration office will not issue replacement paperwork without it. Vietnam does not let you leave until that paperwork exists. Once you hold a new passport, you return to the immigration office for an exit or replacement visa. My lost passport action plan lists the order in detail.
Overstays are settled in person at the office covering your place of residence, and the fines follow Decree 282/2025/ND-CP, in force since 15 December 2025. The tiers and the deportation threshold are laid out in my overstay fine breakdown.
Which immigration office should you choose?
Go to the office in the city where you live, because the embassy says foreigners must appear at the competent local office. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City also have national-level offices for escalated cases. For a plain extension of a sponsored visa the online portal saves the queue, and only the passport travels by post.
| Office | Address | Hours | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanoi, national Immigration Department | 69 Mac Thai To, Yen Hoa, public gate 2 | Filing Monday to Saturday morning, results Monday to Friday | National-level procedures and escalated cases |
| Da Nang, city police | 78 Le Loi, Hai Chau | 08:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 16:00, Saturday morning | Foreigners living in Central Vietnam |
| Ho Chi Minh City, city police | 196 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai | 07:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 17:00, Saturday morning | Foreigners living in the south |
| Ho Chi Minh City, national branch | 333-335-337 Nguyen Trai, District 1 | Filing Monday to Saturday morning, results Monday to Friday | Ministry-level procedures in the south |
Extending a sponsored visa is something you can do yourself with the portal and form NA5. A tourist e‑visa is different: the risk is a wasted trip to a counter that cannot help, or an overstay fine while you look for the right one. If you would rather not track dates and offices, message me on WhatsApp and I will check your visa type and tell you which route fits.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an appointment at a Vietnam immigration office?
I found no official appointment system for the Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi offices. You turn up during counter hours or file online through the government portals.
Does the immigration office speak English?
I could not confirm current English-language service at any of the three counters. Bring your completed form and a Vietnamese-speaking friend or a translator app.
Can a sponsor or agent file my extension for me?
The ministry’s procedure allows the inviting organisation to file, or the foreigner directly. Whether an agent can file without being the sponsor depends on the counter, so ask the office before handing over a passport.
Are the immigration offices open on public holidays?
No. Counter service excludes public holidays and the Tet break, so a visa that expires in that week needs its extension filed beforehand.
How much passport validity do I need for a new e‑visa?
The e‑visa portal says the visa should end at least 30 days before your passport expires. Check your passport before you exit Vietnam to reapply, because a short passport can block the new e‑visa.
