The Hanoi to Hue train takes 12 to 14 hours, and the overnight Reunification Express is the way most people do it: you board in the evening, sleep in a berth and step off in Hue in the morning. Below is which train to pick, which cabin to book and what the ticket really costs.

How Long Is the Train From Hanoi to Hue?

Plan on 12 to 14 hours from Hanoi station to Hue station. The evening departures leave Hanoi between about 19:00 and 22:30 and reach Hue the next morning, so the night covers the distance and you skip a hotel bed.

Timetables shift a little between seasons, so check the departure time on the day you buy. These are the three evening trains most visitors choose:

Which Hanoi to Hue Train Should You Take?

Take SE3 or SE19 if you want a full night of sleep and a morning arrival. Both leave in the evening, give you around 13 hours on board and land in Hue in the morning, so you can drop your bags and start the day. Between the two, I would take SE19, because the 20:10 departure leaves room for a relaxed dinner and still gets you to Hue by 09:30.

SE1 departs late at 22:20 and gets in late in the morning. That works if you want a long last dinner in Hanoi, but most of the first day in Hue is gone by the time you reach your hotel.

Besides the standard SE trains, private operators hook their own carriages onto the same trains. They run on the same timetable and the same track. What you pay extra for is the cabin: fresher bedding, cleaner toilets and a few more snacks.

Soft Sleeper or Hard Sleeper?

Book the soft sleeper. It has four berths in a closed cabin with proper mattresses, so you get a door, a proper mattress and fewer neighbours. For a 13-hour night it is the class that actually lets you rest.

The hard sleeper puts six bunks in a cabin with thinner mattresses. The price depends on the level: the lower bunk costs most, the upper one least. Taking the cheapest upper bunk saves a few euros, but you pay for it with a thin mattress and a cabin shared with five other people. It is fine for a short hop, but for Hanoi to Hue the saving is small and the night is rougher.

Food comes round on carts, but it is better to eat before you board and bring water and a snack. A power outlet is usually available in the cabin, and a light layer helps because the air conditioning runs cold.

How Much Does the Hanoi to Hue Train Cost?

On international booking sites in 2025 and 2026, a standard SE train costs around €50 for a hard sleeper berth and €52 to €55 for a soft sleeper. Private-operator carriages run higher, roughly €58 to €76 for a soft sleeper berth, with the top of the range on the premium carriages.

Those are reseller listings with a service fee included, so treat them as a guide and check the live price for your date. Buying through the railway’s own channels is usually cheaper, but the English interface and card payment are harder, which is why most visitors accept the small premium. Whatever site you use, compare the exact train number and carriage name before paying. The same SE train is often sold at several prices.

Prices go up in peak weeks around Tet and the summer holidays, and the lower berths are the first to sell out.

Where to Book Hanoi to Hue Train Tickets

Book online on 12go.com or vexere.com, ideally a few weeks ahead. Both have English pages, take foreign cards and show train numbers and carriage types. The railway’s own site, dsvn.vn, works too if your card is accepted. Buying at the station window is possible but gives you the leftovers.

Your e-ticket needs the passport name written exactly as in the passport, and you should carry the passport itself, because staff check it when boarding. Hue station is on the south side of the Perfume River, around 2 km from the Citadel, so a Grab or taxi to your hotel takes minutes. If your card is declined on the railway site, try one of the resellers above rather than waiting for the station window. Hanoi trains leave from Ga Ha Noi on Le Duan street, and boarding starts well before departure, so arrive early with your passport and a saved copy of the e-ticket.

Train or Night Bus to Hue?

The train is steadier and gives you a flat bed, so you arrive better rested. I would pay the difference for the flat bed, because a rested first day in Hue is worth more than the saving. The night bus is cheaper and leaves from more places in the city, but the road is bumpy and you sit upright or in a tight pod for much of the night.

If the train is full, the sleeper bus is a workable plan B. I compared both in sleeper bus vs train in Vietnam, and the longer run south is covered in Hanoi to Da Nang by train, bus or flight. Once you are in Hue, getting on to Phong Nha and the Da Nang bus and train options are covered as well.

One thing to check before you book a ticket south: the date your visa ends. Your passport is checked at the station, and a stay that runs out halfway through a Hanoi to Hue to Da Nang route is much harder to fix once you are on the road. You can apply for an e‑visa yourself on the government portal, but if the card payment fails or the entry point is wrong, we handle the whole application, and if it is refused we resubmit it and refund you. Send me your dates on WhatsApp and I will tell you what fits around the train.

FAQ

Is there a direct train from Hanoi to Hue?

Yes. Several Reunification Express trains run straight from Hanoi to Hue every day. You do not change trains.

Can I take luggage on the Hanoi to Hue train?

Yes. There is space for suitcases and backpacks in the cabin and at the end of the carriage, so there is no separate baggage ticket for ordinary luggage. Keep your passport and valuables with you rather than on the rack.

Do children need their own berth?

Small children can share a berth with a parent, but each child who needs their own bed needs a ticket. Check the age rules for child fares on the booking page before you pay.

Do I need to print my e-ticket?

A saved copy on your phone is usually enough, but bring your passport, because the name on the ticket must match it exactly.

Where does the Hanoi to Hue train leave from?

From Hanoi Railway Station (Ga Ha Noi) on Le Duan street. Allow time to find your carriage, as the platform is long.
