If you live in Vietnam on a Russian bank card, the Sber and T-Bank apps are your whole banking system: transfers home, QR payments in shops and the codes that confirm everything else. An app that is already installed on your phone keeps running, and how you install, update and log in decides whether you keep access. The banks have restricted access from abroad before and have never published a guaranteed workaround, so the sensible plan is to prepare both apps before the flight and keep a clear route to bank support.

Do Sber and T-Bank apps work in Vietnam in 2026?

Yes, with limits. Both apps run on a phone in Vietnam, and both banks let you pay by QR code in Vietnamese shops. Sber launched QR payments there in November 2025 and says more than 1 million merchant points accept them. T-Bank followed in July 2026 with QR payments of up to 1 million rubles per operation and no fee, which needs app version 7.29 or later on iPhone and 7.26 or later on Android.

Access is the weak spot. On 7 October 2022 the apps and sites of Sber, VTB and other sanctioned banks stopped opening abroad. Sber described it as temporary restrictions caused by technical work, and clients reported that login came back from a Russian IP address. From 14 to 16 July 2026 T-Bank customers in Thailand, Bali and the US reported a white screen and “wrong password” errors, and the bank confirmed an outage on 14 and 15 July without naming a recovery time. A login failure abroad can hit on any day, so the rest of this guide is about preparing for one.

How do you install the apps on an iPhone?

On an iPhone the safest route is to install each app before you leave Russia and then keep it. T-Bank’s app was removed from the App Store in February 2023. The bank’s help page on app stores lists the ways around it: the instructions in your online account, the support chat phrase “Установить приложение банка на iPhone” and the T-Mazing program.

Both banks have also put disguised versions into the App Store. Sber returned on 23 June 2026 as “Семейный Онлайн” (Family Online), a name that hides a family-budget tracker, and Sber’s support chat confirmed it is the official app. T-Bank released one in June 2026 under the name Toastmas, and its support confirmed that too. Both banks warned the apps can disappear at any time, so ask the support chat which version is current before you install anything. A September 2026 summary by the finance site Brobank adds that removed apps do not come back under their old names. The usual advice is to keep the installed copy, switch off automatic updates and use the web version when the app fails.

How do you install them on Android without Google Play?

T-Bank is available in RuStore, Samsung Galaxy Store and Huawei AppGallery, which means every major store except Google Play, and the bank also posts an APK file on its site. Sber installs from RuStore or from an APK on the bank’s official site. An APK has to be updated by hand. Between RuStore and an APK file I would take the store, since a hand-updated APK is the copy people forget about.

Scammers publish copies of both apps. Take the installer only from RuStore or the bank’s own site, and skip any classified-ads seller or link forwarded in a chat. Installation instructions come from the bank’s support.

Why do bank codes stop arriving after a flight back to Russia?

After international roaming, or when a Russian SIM has not registered on a Russian network for more than 72 hours, mobile data and SMS are switched off for 24 hours while voice calls keep working. The rule has been in testing since 10 November 2025 and fires once you reconnect to a Russian network; while you are in Vietnam it stays off. The operator’s SMS link with a captcha lifts it earlier.

Landing after a trip: a Russian SIM that roamed abroad can lose SMS codes for 24 hours on return.

Kommersant reported in February 2026 that only about half of the activations ran as intended, so the mistake to avoid is booking a rent payment or a transfer for the day you land, when the SMS codes may stay silent for a full day. The full phone setup, including roaming prices, is in my guide to a Russian number in Vietnam.

What should you do when the bank blocks your login abroad?

Call the bank through the number printed on your card or inside the app, and let support tell you what is happening. Sber support may ask for your code word before it unlocks the app. Never install a patched app, never send a screenshot of a code to anyone and never follow instructions from a stranger in a chat.

Sber has published no workaround, and I do not give steps for getting around a bank’s own access rules. Support is the route, and the legal side of VPNs is in the questions at the end.

Where does a Russian card stop working in Vietnam?

A Russian bank app now covers QR payments in shops and transfers home, and it stops at the Vietnamese e‑visa portal, which declines Russian cards. The government fee is $25 for a single entry and $50 for multiple entries, paid on evisa.gov.vn, so a declined card blocks the visa while the days on your current stamp run out.

Hands taking cash from an ATM
Cash from an ATM is the fallback when a bank app or QR payment is unavailable.

This is the step I take over at BestBus Vietnam: I fill in the application, pay the fee with a card the portal accepts and set the correct entry point, as part of the 90-day e‑visa service. I need only your dates to start, and message me on WhatsApp to get a count of what fits them. For everyday shopping, the comparison of cards, cash and QR in Vietnam shows what to carry besides the app.

Step-by-step: prepare both apps before you fly

Preparation takes one evening and four things: the Sber app, the T-Bank app, RuStore if you use Android and a Russian SIM that still receives SMS. The order matters, because the first steps need SMS codes to reach you and the last ones protect you from an outage on the road.

A charged phone with both bank apps installed is the whole preparation list in one picture.
  1. Update Sber and T-Bank to the latest versions, which also covers the T-Bank builds named above for QR payments.
  2. On iPhone, switch off automatic app updates so the store cannot swap a working copy for a removed one.
  3. On Android, install from RuStore or the bank’s site and note which source you used, because APK updates are manual.
  4. Check that the phone number linked to each bank is one you can still receive SMS on, and keep that Russian SIM alive.
  5. Save the support routes: the number on the card and the in-app chat. Keep your code word at hand.
  6. Keep a card from a second bank, with its app installed, so one outage does not freeze all your money.

Which setup fits a short trip and a long stay?

For a short trip, keep the installed apps, update them before departure and carry cash for places that do not take QR. For a stay of months, add a second bank and keep the Russian SIM alive for codes. Of the six steps, the second bank card matters most to me, because the 2022 and 2026 outages described above hit different banks.

A visa that runs out is harder to repair than an app that will not open. Tell me when your stamp ends or when you land, and send me those dates so I can say whether the visa for them is quick or tight.

Frequently asked questions

Is using a VPN legal in Russia and in Vietnam?

In Russia, using a VPN is not punished by itself, but a 2025 law fines advertising VPN services, 50,000 to 80,000 rubles for individuals. Vietnam’s Decree 147/2024, in force since 25 December 2024, puts duties on platforms and providers and has no separate rule for private VPN users.

What are T-Bank's free SBP transfer limits since September 2026?

Since 15 September 2026, transfers to other people through SBP are free up to 100,000 rubles a month without a subscription and up to 300,000 with Pro. Premium and Private have no limit. Above the limit the fee is 0.5%, up to 1,500 rubles per transfer.

Can I pay by QR with a VTB card in Vietnam?

VTB reports QR payments at more than 3,000 points in Vietnam, with a limit of 350,000 rubles per operation. That network is small next to Sber’s, so VTB works as a backup card rather than your main one.

Do I see the dong amount before a Sber QR payment is confirmed?

Yes. Sber converts rubles to dong automatically and shows the converted amount in the app before you confirm the payment, so you can check the total at the till.
