Phu Quoc has no land border, so a visa run from the island means leaving by plane, or taking the fast boat to Ha Tien and driving to the Prek Chak crossing into Cambodia. Three routes work in 2026: a direct flight to Phnom Penh, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, the Ha Tien ferry with a short taxi ride, or a flight to Ho Chi Minh City and a bus to Moc Bai. The ferry route is the cheapest, at about $9 for the boat plus $3-4 for the taxi.

I organise visa runs across Vietnam, and Phu Quoc is the place where people most often assume an island with a Cambodian coastline must have a crossing. The figures below come from operator pages, the Cambodian embassy’s list of checkpoints and the Vietnamese e‑visa rules, and I rechecked them in September 2026. Confirm ferry times and flight schedules on the day you book.

Does Phu Quoc have a land border with Cambodia?

No. Phu Quoc is an island in the Gulf of Thailand, and every way off it is by air or sea. The island has two Vietnamese e‑visa entry points, Phu Quoc airport and An Thoi port. The nearest land crossing is the Xa Xia gate at Ha Tien on the mainland, opposite Prek Chak in Cambodia, and you reach it by ferry first.

If you are weighing Ha Tien against the northern and southern crossings, my comparison of the three main visa-run borders puts them side by side.

How does the 30-day island exemption work?

Every nationality gets 30 days visa-free when arriving directly on Phu Quoc by air or sea from abroad, and the exemption is valid only on the island. Russian citizens have a longer, nationwide exemption of 45 days under Resolution 44/NQ-CP, valid until 14 March 2028, so the island rule matters mostly for other passports.

Entry stamps in a passport: the term stamped on arrival decides when your Phu Quoc visa run has to happen.

The island term cannot be extended. Travel sites that explain the rule agree that the ferry to Ha Tien or Rach Gia is a domestic route the island stamp does not cover, so the route you choose has to match the entry you hold. Those sites are not the law text, so read the term stamped in your passport at the counter.

Option 1: how do you fly out of Phu Quoc for a visa run?

Fly from Phu Quoc to a foreign airport and back. Direct routes in 2026 run to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Phnom Penh, operated by Sun PhuQuoc Airways, VietJet, Scoot, AirAsia and Air Cambodia. Phnom Penh has only a few flights a week, at roughly $80 to $130 one way, so build the trip around the timetable.

A direct flight abroad is the cleanest Phu Quoc visa run, because landing back gives a fresh island entry.

The advantage is the return leg. Landing at Phu Quoc airport from abroad is the entry the island exemption was built for, so you get a fresh island term without touching the mainland. The cost is the fare and a fixed schedule.

Option 2: is the ferry to Ha Tien worth it?

The ferry works if you hold a Vietnamese visa, an e‑visa or a nationality exemption such as the Russian 45 days, because Ha Tien is a mainland land gate and the island exemption does not carry over. Fast boats from Bai Vong to Ha Tien take about 1 hour 20 minutes and cost about $9 (230,000 VND on Superdong), with sailings in the morning and early afternoon. Prices and timetables are in my Phu Quoc ferry guide and the Ha Tien to Phu Quoc schedule.

From the Ha Tien port the Xa Xia gate is about 8 km away, a taxi or moto ride that costs $3-4, and it is reported to be open from 07:00 to 18:00. Ha Tien is on the Vietnamese list of 83 e‑visa entry points. On the Cambodian side, the embassy’s checkpoint table accepts the Cambodian e‑visa only at Bavet, so at Prek Chak plan on a visa on arrival. Cambodia’s tourist visa costs $30 on the government e‑visa portal and at the border, and some officers ask for $35, so carry a few spare dollars.

This is the point where a run from the island tends to stall. The Vietnamese e‑visa has to be approved before you board, approval takes up to 3 working days on evisa.gov.vn, and the portal declines many foreign bank cards at the payment step. A late or refused e‑visa costs you the morning boat and an extra night in Ha Tien. You can file it yourself with a card that works. I take that part off your hands through BestBus Vietnam: I pay the government fee with a card the portal accepts, and if the e‑visa is refused I refile it free and refund you. Send me your dates on WhatsApp and I will tell you which sailing you can still catch.

Option 3: should you fly to Ho Chi Minh City and take the bus to Moc Bai?

Choose this route if you want the Cambodian e‑visa to work at the gate. Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh City is one of the busiest domestic flights, with roughly 250 departures a month, and the Moc Bai crossing into Bavet accepts the Cambodian e‑visa. The bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh take 6-7 hours and cost $12-35.

You re-enter Vietnam on the mainland afterwards, so the same visa rule as the ferry applies: a valid visa, an e‑visa or a nationality exemption. My Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh bus guide compares the operators and drop-off points.

Step-by-step: how do you plan a visa run from Phu Quoc?

Work backwards from the entry you need on return. Vietnam’s e‑visa costs $25 for a single entry and $50 for multiple entries, is valid for up to 90 days and takes 3 working days on the official portal. Then follow the order below. For a done-for-you version, see our Da Nang visa run page.

  1. Read the term stamped at your last entry and count back from its final day.
  2. Fly abroad if you hold only the island exemption, and take the ferry or the Ho Chi Minh City flight if you hold a visa, an e‑visa or a nationality exemption.
  3. File the Vietnamese e‑visa at least 3 working days before travel if your return goes through Ha Tien or Moc Bai.
  4. Arrange the Cambodian visa, $30 on arrival or the e‑visa if you cross at Moc Bai.
  5. Book the return leg the same day: the flight back to Phu Quoc, or the boat from Ha Tien.

Which route should you pick?

Pick the flight if you hold only the island exemption, the ferry if you already have a visa and want the lowest cost, and Ho Chi Minh City with the bus if the Cambodian e‑visa must work at the gate. For a Russian passport on the 45-day exemption, the ferry to Ha Tien is usually the cheapest of the three.

You can run all of this yourself with the ferry operator’s site, the government e‑visa form and a visa counter at the border. What usually costs people a day is the order of things: an e‑visa that arrives after the morning boat has left, or a taxi that reaches the gate near closing time. If you would rather not think about sequencing, write to me on WhatsApp and I will map the run to your dates.

Frequently asked questions

Can Russians re-enter straight after a run without waiting?

The old 30-day gap between visa-free entries was removed on 1 July 2020, according to travel sites that cite the law, so a Russian passport can go out and come back immediately for a new stamp. Immigration officers decide at the counter, so keep your return ticket ready.

Where do I go after crossing at Prek Chak?

Kampot and Kep are 1.5 to 2.5 hours beyond the gate by road, and Sihanoukville is about 4 hours. Plan the onward ride before you cross, because the gate is a long way from any town.

Is the VIP seat on the fast ferry worth paying for?

On Phu Quoc Express the VIP seat costs about $12.50 (330,000 VND) and economy about $8.20, on the same crossing of about 1 hour 20 minutes. The sailing time is identical, so the upgrade changes the seat, not the schedule.

Is there a direct flight from Phu Quoc to Siem Reap?

AirAsia Cambodia announced a route in December 2025 with about two flights a week. A schedule aggregator showed no flights in September 2026, so check the airline before you plan around it.
