A rented scooter is the easiest way to see Phu Quoc, and the costly mistakes happen at the deposit, on the northern dirt tracks and at the licence check. A Honda Vision or Air Blade runs about $5-6 a day in October 2026 (130,000-150,000 dong), and a basic Wave or Sirius is cheaper at $3-5 (80,000-120,000 dong). Taxis and app rides are covered at the end for anyone who would rather not ride.

Which Phu Quoc roads are safe on a rented scooter?

The main roads are in good shape: Long Beach and Tran Hung Dao in Duong Dong, the road to the airport and the coast heading south. The weak spot is the north, where the approaches to Ganh Dau and Bai Thom and the tracks into the national park turn into red laterite dirt with ruts and loose sand. After rain a standard rental scooter barely moves there.

Morning scooter traffic on an island road
Asphalt roads are fine for a rented scooter; the unpaved turns are where Phu Quoc motorbike rental goes wrong.

Most of the island is asphalt. Dirt remains on the track from Suoi Cai towards Ganh Dau and on the way to Rach Vem, and the Suoi Cai track is the one I steer clear of on a standard Vision, because on the map it looks like a shortcut. I keep the north for a dry morning and treat any unpaved turn as a reason to park and walk.

How long does it take to ride between the beaches?

From Duong Dong, Ong Lang is 7-8 km and 10-15 minutes away. Ganh Dau and VinWonders are about 25 km, or 35-45 minutes. An Thoi and Sunset Town are 25-30 km, 40-55 minutes, and Bai Sao is 25-28 km, 40-50 minutes. The island is about 50 km from north to south, so the whole length takes roughly an hour and a half.

Fuel is capped by the state: from 15 October 2026 E5 RON92 costs no more than 26,971 dong a litre and E10 RON95-III no more than 27,029 dong, which is about $1.06, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Fill the tank in town before heading north, because stations thin out on the far roads.

How much does a scooter cost per day on Phu Quoc?

An automatic Honda Vision, Air Blade or Lead usually goes for 130,000-150,000 dong a day, and the whole range on the island is 120,000-200,000 dong. Stronger PCX, NVX and Vario 160 models cost around $6-12 (160,000-300,000 dong), and guides disagree most on these.

Airport desks and hotel rental points charge the most, 150,000-200,000 dong, though haggling works. Shops along Tran Hung Dao in Duong Dong and on Long Beach offer more choice at lower rates, and many deliver the bike to your hotel for free. For a week or longer, rental shops cut the daily rate by 10-40% depending on the guide, so name the discount before you take the key. December to February is the peak, when prices rise, and in the low season bargaining is easier.

Should you leave your passport as a deposit?

No: keep the original passport and offer a copy, cash or a card hold instead. Deposits on Phu Quoc follow no standard. Some shops keep the original passport, some take cash, some accept a copy or a photo, and some ask for nothing. Between cash and a copy I lean towards the copy, since a dispute over a scratch then costs you an argument rather than money you have already handed over. Cash deposit amounts are quoted inconsistently, so ask for the figure in writing in the shop’s chat.

A passport being passed through a counter window
Offer a copy or cash instead: a passport left as a motorbike rental deposit can trap your stay.

Phu Quoc has a known pattern where a bike is handed over with damage, a large repair bill appears at return and the passport is held until you pay. It is described in several guides and is not universal. The worst case is a passport sitting in a shop while your stamp runs out in a few days: every day of argument counts against your stay, and an overstay brings a fine. At BestBus Vietnam I arrange 90-day e-visas end to end, filling in the form myself and paying the government fee with a card the portal accepts, so your dates stay safe. Message me on WhatsApp with your stamp expiry date and I will tell you whether you have time.

What does the law ask of foreign riders on the island?

A licence is required for any bike above 50 cc, and nearly every rental scooter on Phu Quoc is 100-160 cc. A foreigner needs either a Vietnamese licence or a 1968 Vienna Convention international permit carried together with the national licence of the right category. My full breakdown of categories and conversion is in the Vietnam driving licence guide.

Under Decree 168/2024, riding without a licence or with the wrong category on a bike up to 125 cc costs about $80-160 (2-4 million dong), and above 125 cc about $240-315 (6-8 million dong). A rental owner who hands a bike to an unlicensed rider faces 8-10 million dong. It has happened on the island: on 4 May 2025 police wrote a report on a Russian tourist at Bai Thom, impounded his bike for 10 days and summoned the owner of the Tran Hung Dao rental shop for questioning.

Is it too wet to ride in October?

Yes, October is still wet: it is a transition month, and riding is more relaxed from November. The rainy season runs from May to October and the dry months are November to April. Low-lying streets flood: after hours of rain on 24 July 2026 the roads in Duong Dong went under, as Tien Phong reported.

People waiting under a shelter during the rainy season
In the rainy season a scooter rental day often means waiting out a downpour under cover.

Buy a raincoat on the first day, since shops everywhere sell one for a few thousand dong. Dirt tracks turn into mud ruts and a scooter slides on them. Asphalt stays rideable, but braking distances grow noticeably.

Step-by-step: how to rent and return a bike on Phu Quoc

  1. Match the engine size to the category on your licence and carry the 1968 permit with it.
  2. Compare prices at two shops on Tran Hung Dao and ask for hotel delivery.
  3. Offer a copy of your passport, cash or a card hold instead of the original.
  4. Film the scooter from every side with existing scratches while a staff member is present.
  5. Test the brakes, headlight, indicators and tyres, and ask what the shop does after a breakdown.
  6. Return the bike with the same fuel level and show the video if the shop raises a claim.

Scooter, Grab or Xanh SM: which one for your trip?

A scooter wins for three days or more and for beach hopping in the south. Grab and Xanh SM suit one or two long transfers, especially in the evening or in heavy rain. Grab runs on the island and shows the price before you book, and Xanh SM has operated on Phu Quoc since 2 July 2023. A car is hard to call at the far north and far south.

A passenger on the back seat of a motorbike taxi
A motorbike taxi ride is the alternative when you would rather skip scooter rental.

A ride from Duong Dong to Bai Sao costs $10-14 (250,000-350,000 dong), and crossing the island from south to north $20-28 (500,000-700,000 dong). The guide figure for Xanh SM is around 14,000-16,000 dong a kilometre, so check the app. The scooter is a decision you can make alone: a video at handover, a copy of the passport and a raincoat cover most risks. Your stamp is different, and nobody calculates it for you. Send me your entry and departure dates on WhatsApp and I will work out what is cheaper, an e‑visa or a border run.

Frequently asked questions

Is VinBus free for tourists on Phu Quoc?

Only for holders of a Vingroup ticket such as VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari or Grand World. Without one a ride starts at about 20,000 dong. The buses cover the Vinpearl corridor and do not replace island transport.

Does travel insurance pay if I crash a rented scooter?

With a valid licence in the right category, travel insurance usually covers treatment. Without legal papers insurers typically refuse. The rental bike itself is rarely insured, so the shop prices any repair. Check your policy for motorbike and engine-size exclusions.

Do I need to wear a helmet, and what is the fine?

A helmet is compulsory for the rider and the passenger. Under Decree 168/2024 the fine is 400,000-600,000 dong, about $16-24, and a helmet that is not fastened counts as none.

Which fuel does a rental scooter take, E5 RON92 or E10?

Since 1 June 2026 regular petrol in Vietnam must be E10, while E5 RON92 stays allowed until the end of 2030. Ask the rental shop which grade your model takes before the first fill.
