A full visa run day takes 10–11 hours, one hour less than the Lao Bao route (250 km, 11–12 hours). Since December 2025, Vietnam e-visa is accepted at Nam Giang, making it the most practical option for expats and digital nomads based in Da Nang.

Is e-visa accepted at Nam Giang border crossing?
Yes, since December 2025. Vietnam Government Resolution 389/NQ-CP (published 02.12.2025) expanded the list of land borders accepting e-visa from 13 to 83 crossing points. Nam Giang International Border Gate is now on that list, as published on the official government website.
Before December 2025, e-visa was not accepted at Nam Giang — older forum posts still say it doesn’t work. That information is outdated as of December 2025.
The current process: apply for Vietnam e-visa at evisa.gov.vn, travel to Nam Giang, cross into Laos, return with a fresh entry stamp. Single-entry e-visa costs $25, multiple-entry costs $50.
What does a Nam Giang visa run cost?
A full Nam Giang visa run from Da Nang costs roughly $53–68 per person, all-in:
- E-visa: $25 (single-entry, evisa.gov.vn)
- Transport: $25–35 per person (private transfer with driver, split between 2–3 people)
- Border fees: $3–5 cash on Vietnamese side entry (approximately 20,000–50,000 VND)
Organized visa run tours to Lao Bao typically cost $80–120 per person. There are no card terminals at the border. Bring Vietnamese dong or USD in cash for crossing fees.
What is the Nam Giang border crossing like?
The crossing takes 30 minutes to 1 hour total. There are almost no tourist groups at Nam Giang — it’s not on any organized tour circuit. On the Laos side, the crossing is called Dansavanh. It’s a small post; don’t expect restaurants or shops on either side.
The road to Nam Giang runs through the Truong Son mountains — serpentine curves, mountain passes, some unpaved stretches. The scenery is excellent: dense jungle, no traffic. If you get carsick on winding roads, bring motion sickness medication.

Nam Giang or Lao Bao: which should you choose?
Nam Giang is the better choice if you’re based in Da Nang or Hoi An and want to spend less time on the road. Lao Bao makes more sense if you’re coming from Hue, where it’s much closer, or if you want established tourist services with cafes and transport near the gate.
The key point for 2026: Nam Giang now accepts e-visa and is 100 km closer than Lao Bao from Da Nang. For most Da Nang expats doing routine visa runs, that makes Nam Giang the practical first choice.
