The evening sleeper buses are the cheapest option on this route, often $7-8 for a flat bed, while the earlier seat buses run $14-15 with AC and reclining seats. From Dong Hoi, a local bus from Nam Ly bus station to Phong Nha runs about $2 per person and takes roughly 1.5 hours, while a taxi from the train station costs from about 600,000 VND (~$24) and takes around 45 minutes. Combined with the train leg, total journey time by rail runs somewhere between 5 and 7 hours depending on which onward transfer you catch — noticeably slower than the direct bus, and with an extra connection to manage at Dong Hoi. What about the new Hue-Phong Nha tourist train launching in 2026?
A new state-backed “Hue Ancient Capital – Phong Nha” heritage tourist train begins service on September 1, 2026, running the roughly 190 km route from Hue through Dong Ha, My Trach and Dong Hoi to Tho Loc station — the gateway stop for Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Fares start from around VND 360,000 (~$14) per passenger, and the journey takes about 4.5 hours.
The service was set up under a July 31, 2026 agreement between Quang Tri province, Hue city and Vietnam Railways Corporation, and runs eight carriages with capacity for 304 passengers — five 56-seat rotating soft-seat coaches, one 24-seat VIP coach, a community coach and a service coach. The proposed timetable has train HQ2 leaving Hue at 7:15am and arriving Tho Loc at 11:55am, with the return train HQ1 departing Tho Loc at 1:15pm and reaching Hue at 5:25pm. This schedule is described as proposed by Vietnam Railways, so it’s worth confirming closer to your travel date whether it’s still running daily once the route has settled in.
Tho Loc station sits closer to the caves than Dong Hoi does, so this train removes the road transfer that the older Hue-Dong Hoi rail route requires — a real upgrade if the timetable holds.
How much does a private car or transfer cost?
A private car or transfer from Hue to Phong Nha costs roughly $85-200 depending on vehicle size and operator, and takes about 3.5-4 hours door to door with no transfers. Sedan rates from operators I’ve seen quoted run from around $85-100, SUVs $97-144, and larger vans up toward $145-200 for bigger groups.
This is the fastest and least complicated option if you’re traveling with kids, heavy luggage, or just don’t want to sit through a shared bus schedule. The driver picks you up at your Hue hotel and drops you at your Phong Nha accommodation directly, so there’s no station transfer, no waiting for a connecting bus, and no language barrier to navigate at a bus office. It costs more per person for solo travelers, but split across three or four people it lands close to the bus price with a fraction of the hassle.
How far is Phong Nha from Hue, and can you fly?
The road distance from Hue to Phong Nha is approximately 200-215 km, depending on the exact starting and ending points in each city. There is no airport in Phong Nha itself — the nearest air access is Dong Hoi Airport (VDH), so flying is not a direct option for this specific leg unless you’re combining it with a longer trip that already routes through Dong Hoi by air.
What should you actually book?
If you’re solo or on a budget, the evening sleeper bus at $7-8 is hard to beat — you sleep through most of the ride and wake up in Phong Nha. If you’re traveling with a group of three or more, or you’ve got an early cave tour booked the next morning and can’t risk a delayed bus, the private car earns its price: door to door in under four hours, no station transfer. The new tourist train is worth watching once it’s running a few months and the schedule has settled, since it lands you at Tho Loc, right at the park’s doorstep, without a taxi at the other end.
