Da Nang to Hoi An is 30 km — an easy 45-minute drive. The cheapest option in 2026 is the LK-02 public bus at 35,000 VND (~$1.40). If you’re short on time, Grab runs $10–14 door-to-door and arrives in minutes. I’ve been making this trip regularly and the options have genuinely improved since 2024.

The 30 km you want to plan ahead

Hoi An is worth the trip from Da Nang — the Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Old Quarter is genuinely impressive even if you’ve been around Southeast Asia for a while. Most visitors do Hoi An as a day trip or base themselves there for a few nights.

The road connects the two cities along the coast. Traffic is light outside of rush hours. Worth planning if you’re leaving in the evening or have a flight the same day back to Da Nang. If you’re also thinking about bus routes in Central Vietnam beyond this stretch, the same logic applies.

LK-02 — the public bus that actually works

In April 2024, Da Nang launched the LK-02 line — an air-conditioned bus running from Da Nang bus station direct to Hoi An bus station. It departs every 15–30 minutes and takes around 45–60 minutes.

Cost: 35,000 VND, paid in cash to the conductor on board. That’s the cheapest way to make this trip, full stop.

From Da Nang: board near Be Thanh bus station. The Hoi An stop is at the central bus station — about a 10–15 minute walk to the Ancient Town, or 30,000 VND for a bicycle rickshaw.

Best for: solo travelers or couples without bulky luggage, on a budget, not in a rush.

Grab and ride-hailing: my go-to in Da Nang

Grab is the standard ride-hailing app across Vietnam — think Uber but with better coverage. Open the app, type in your Hoi An address, and you’ll see the price before confirming: a GrabCar runs 250,000–350,000 VND, a GrabBike is cheaper but not practical with a suitcase.

Be — a Vietnamese competitor to Grab — is worth checking too. On this route it’s sometimes 10–15% cheaper. I have both apps installed and check both before booking.

Wait time in central Da Nang: 3–8 minutes. Longer on weekend evenings.

Best for: traveling with luggage, going in the evening, traveling with kids, or when time matters.

Private transfer — when it’s worth paying more

If you’re heading straight from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An, a private transfer starts to make sense. Solo: around 110,000–150,000 VND through booking platforms like Klook. A 7-seat minivan for a family: around 500,000 VND. At those numbers, a GrabCar from the airport with bags ends up similar or more expensive.

Services run hourly from 5 AM to 11 PM. Your driver meets you at arrivals with a sign. This is also the smoothest option if you’ve just arrived after a visa run from Da Nang to Laos and need to get straight to your hotel.

Best for: airport-to-Hoi An direct, groups of 3+, late-night arrivals.

Renting a motorbike: the adventurous but risky option

You can rent a scooter in Da Nang and ride to Hoi An — it’s a straightforward 30 km on Highway 1. Rentals run 90,000–150,000 VND per day. The route is simple, no complex navigation.

The honest caveat: Vietnamese roads operate on their own logic. Trucks and buses don’t always keep their lane, and the traffic density on this stretch catches first-timers off guard. If you haven’t ridden in Vietnam before, I’d wait until you’ve had a few days on quieter streets. Check out how sleeper buses compare to trains in Vietnam if you’re thinking about the broader Central Vietnam transport picture.

Best for: riders already comfortable with Vietnamese traffic, not on a tight schedule, want to stop at the Marble Mountains on the way.
