Most people in Dalat who ask about a visa run should first ask whether they need one. The run itself is two overnight buses through Saigon to the Moc Bai crossing: about 32 hours and roughly $60, because Dalat is far from every border. For a stay longer than 45 days, a new e‑visa is usually the cheaper answer.

Is a Dalat visa run worth it or should you file an e‑visa?

Filing an e‑visa wins whenever you have 3-7 days to spare. A 90-day multiple-entry e‑visa costs $50, is applied for online from your Dalat apartment and needs no travel. The run costs about $60 plus two days of your time, and it only buys a fresh entry.

Compare them on the same terms. The run gives another 45 days only if your passport qualifies for the visa exemption, and if it does not, you still need an approved e‑visa before you come back. Leaving and returning also does not stretch an existing e‑visa, because its dates are fixed. The run wins in one case: your visa ends in a day or two and no approval can arrive in time. Our e‑visa versus visa run breakdown covers the other cases.

What does the Dalat to Moc Bai run cost?

Budget about $60 per person: two sleeper buses at $11-15 each, the Saigon city bus 703 both ways for $3-4 in total, and a Cambodian tourist visa at Bavet for $30. Hotels cost nothing because both nights are on the bus.

A limousine van instead of a sleeper runs $10-29 a seat, and Tet weeks push fares up two to three times. A new e‑visa adds $25 single-entry or $50 multiple-entry on the government portal, never at the border. If a delayed approval leaves you waiting in Bavet, add a hotel night, which is why I tell people to file first and travel second.

Step-by-step: the 32-hour timetable

  1. Around 22:00, board a sleeper bus in Dalat. The 300 km over the Bao Loc pass takes 6.5-8 hours, so you reach Mien Dong bus station in Saigon early morning.
  2. At about 6:30, ride city bus 703 from central Saigon toward the border. It covers roughly 70 km in 2-2.5 hours for 40,000-50,000 dong, so you arrive near 9:00. Confirm the stop in Google Maps that day.
  3. Exit Vietnam, walk to the Cambodian side and buy the visa.
  4. Return to the Vietnamese post with an approved e‑visa or a valid exemption, and re-enter.
  5. Take 703 back to Saigon by early afternoon and catch the evening sleeper home.

Early-morning Saigon: the sleeper from Dalat arrives here, and bus 703 leaves for Moc Bai.

That leaves several spare hours at the border for queues, which matter more than the distance.

What trips people up at the Moc Bai border?

The Cambodian visa costs about $30 if you write an address on the form and $32 without one. Bring small US bills, because change for large notes is rare. Check for two Cambodian stamps, an oval and an octagonal one, before you walk back, or you will be sent to the queue again. For a done-for-you version, see our Da Nang visa run page.

Bavet is a five to ten minute walk from the Vietnamese post, so you can ignore the motorbike touts. Cambodia is rolling out a free e-Arrival card at arrival.gov.kh, filled in within seven days before travel. Coverage at land crossings is still expanding, so check the site and carry a pen in case you get a paper form.

The costly trap is on the Vietnamese side. Vietnam does not issue visas on arrival at land crossings, so your e‑visa must be approved before you leave. The portal usually takes about 3 working days, sometimes a week. More on the crossing itself is in our Moc Bai border guide.

If you would rather not fight the application form or the portal payment, message me on WhatsApp with your dates. I file the e‑visa for you and pay the government fee, so you never touch a card on the portal. If it is refused we resubmit free and refund you, and when a deadline is tight I use the faster channel. Message me on WhatsApp and I will tell you which option is cheaper for your situation.
