September in Da Nang is still hot, humid and wet, and it is the month when typhoon season stops being a forecast and becomes a plan. Expect a daytime high near 32°C, nights near 24.5°C, humidity around 82% and roughly 300 to 350 mm of rain, with October heavier still. I look at three things before the month starts: the weather, the airport and the holiday calendar.
What is the weather in Da Nang in September?
Da Nang in September averages a daytime high of 31.8°C and a night low of 24.5°C, with humidity around 82%. The rainy season runs from mid-August to mid-December, so showers are normal. September is still milder than October, which is the wettest month of the year in the long-term averages.

Sources disagree on the exact rainfall. The climate table on Wikipedia, built on Vietnamese building-science data, lists 350.7 mm and 14.6 rainy days for September, while other datasets give about 300 mm and 18 rainy days. Treat 300 to 350 mm as the range. In the same table October brings 628 mm and 20 rainy days, so a flat that stays dry in September has not yet been tested. I keep a rain poncho in the bike’s under-seat box and do outdoor errands in the morning.
How likely is a typhoon in Da Nang in September?
A close storm is a real possibility: Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, as reported by Vietnamese media, expected 2 to 3 storms or depressions on the East Sea in September 2026, with 1 to 2 reaching land. Typhoon season on the central coast peaks from September to November, and in the 1961 to 2014 record September is the month with the most tropical cyclone landfalls in Vietnam.
Two recent Septembers show what a close storm does to the city. Typhoon Noru came ashore in central Vietnam on 28 September 2022 with gusts up to level 14, and Da Nang airport was closed from 12:00 on 27 September until 11:59 on 28 September. The detail I weigh most is that this closure began at noon a full day before the landfall, so a flight booked for the eve of a storm is already at risk. Early reports counted 2 houses without roofs, 172 transformer stations without power and 75 fallen trees in Da Nang, with no deaths. Typhoon Bualoi on 28 September 2025 closed the airport for five hours, from 06:00 to 11:00, according to the Vietnamese government news portal.
Vietnam grades disaster risk from level 1 (blue) to level 5 (purple) under Decision 18/2021. The national disaster hotline is 112, and 113, 114 and 115 reach police, firefighters and an ambulance.
What should I do with the bike and the flat before a storm?
Park the bike on high ground and under cover. Da Nang residents move bikes and cars to higher streets such as 30 Thang 4, Nguyen Tat Thanh and Le Thanh Nghi, put sandbags or water containers on rooftops and keep food for three days before a storm arrives.

Check what your insurance actually pays. Compulsory civil liability insurance does not cover damage to your own motorbike, and storm or flood damage is paid only under a voluntary policy, according to the contract terms. I read the voluntary policy before the season, while there is still time to add the cover it lacks. My guide for residents has the full 72-hour storm kit and landlord questions, and the rent guide for Da Nang explains which floors and streets get wet. If you ride long term, the buy or rent comparison for motorbikes covers the paperwork.
What happens to flights and visa-run plans when a storm closes the airport?
A storm can close Da Nang airport for as little as five hours, as with Bualoi in 2025, or for about a day, as with Noru in 2022. The decision comes from the civil aviation authority and follows the storm forecast, so the closure often starts before the rain does.

This is where a visa deadline gets expensive. If your stamp ends on a storm day, a cancelled trip to the border or a grounded flight turns a missed day into an overstay. Leave at least three spare days before any stamp or ticket date in September. The border run is possible alone with a coach ticket and a printed e‑visa. The part I take over at BestBus Vietnam is the timing: I run the one-day visa run from Da Nang, and I can read the forecast and your stamp date together. Send me your stamp date and I will tell you how much slack you have.
What changes in the city around 2 September and Mid-Autumn?
National Day on 2 September pushes domestic travel up. In 2026 civil servants had five days off, from 29 August to 2 September, airlines put almost 1 million seats on the main domestic routes (about 10% more than a year earlier) and Hanoi to Da Nang flights on 29 August were already 55% booked by 22 August. Private employers usually give 2 days. Book September trips around the holiday early.

Tet Trung Thu, the Mid-Autumn Festival, falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, so its date moves every year. In 2026 it was Friday 25 September. It is the children’s lantern and mooncake festival, and the shops fill with boxed mooncakes in the weeks before.
When does the school year start in Da Nang?
Vietnam opens the school year with one nationwide ceremony on 5 September. In 2026 it began at 07:30 for about 26 million pupils, from kindergarten to university. Families with children should buy uniforms and books in August, because the first week has no slack.
International schools publish their own calendars, so ask the admissions office for the first day and the term dates. For fees, health cover and the first month with kids, see the guide to moving to Vietnam with children.
Checklist: what to check every September
Check the forecast every morning, park the bike on high ground, keep three days of water and food, and leave three spare days before any stamp or flight date. Book travel around 2 September early.
The storm bulletin and a rebooked flight are things you can follow alone in an evening. The hard part is a stamp that expires while the airport is shut, and for that case you can message me on WhatsApp with your city and dates, and I will say what fits before the first storm of the season.
Frequently asked questions
How many storms hit Vietnam in a year?
Nationwide, about 3 to 6 tropical cyclones make landfall in a year, depending on how landfall is defined. One study of 1970 to 2019 gives an average of 3.4 landfalls a year, so the central coast gets a share of them, not all.
What is the difference between a tropical depression and a typhoon in Vietnam?
Vietnam classes cyclones as tropical depression, tropical storm, severe tropical storm, typhoon and super typhoon, and its Beaufort scale runs up to level 17. A depression is the weakest stage, so a warning for one is a reason to watch the forecast, not to leave.
What is the outlook for the rest of the 2026 season?
The national forecasting centre expected about 9.6 storms on the East Sea from August to December 2026, with 3.8 landfalls, below the long-term norm. It also warned that single storms can still be strong, and that the centre and south are more exposed from September to December.
What does Da Nang close when a storm is near?
The city bans boats from going to sea and asks residents to limit going out. When Typhoon Trami approached on 27 October 2024, Da Nang asked people to stay in from 10:00 and closed entry and exit to the Son Tra peninsula.
