China’s 30-day visa-free entry works at the Youyiguan land crossing on the Vietnam border, but the end date depends on your passport. Russian passport holders are covered until 31 December 2027, while citizens of 48 other countries, among them the UK, Canada and Germany, are covered only until the end of 2026, and US and Ukrainian passports are not on the list at all.

Every fact below is dated 27 October 2026, and where sources disagree I say so. I read this crossing as a trip that has to end with a clean return to Vietnam, so the return leg gets as much space as the Chinese side.

How does the Youyiguan crossing work for a foreigner?

You walk about 500 meters between the two checkpoints after exit control. Youyiguan, also called the Friendship Pass, is the Chinese side of the Huu Nghi international gate in Lang Son province, which takes foreign travelers, including those on a Vietnam e‑visa. The Chinese town on the other side is Pingxiang in Guangxi.

From Hanoi the expressway to Lang Son is about 154 kilometers, around 2 to 2.5 hours, and a bus to the gate itself takes roughly 3 hours. The same road carries the international bus from Hanoi to Nanning, which takes 8 to 9 hours according to travel portals, while the train from Hanoi needs about 12 hours. My guide to Vietnam-China border crossings compares the three land gates and the train.

Which passports can enter China visa-free in 2026?

The Chinese embassy’s FAQ of 3 June 2026 lists 50 countries with 30-day visa-free entry. Russia is covered until 31 December 2027 and Brunei has no end date. The other 48 are valid until 31 December 2026, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the UK and Canada, which joined on 17 February 2026.

Belarus and Kazakhstan enter under separate bilateral agreements, as do Uzbekistan since 1 June 2025 and a few other countries, while US and Ukrainian citizens have no place on the visa-free list. The regime covers tourism, business, visiting friends or family, exchanges and transit, and it excludes work, study and journalism.

The source for all of this is the Chinese embassy’s visa-free FAQ, plus the Beijing government’s announcement on the UK and Canada.

Is the end-of-2026 deadline a risk for your trip?

Yes for 48 countries: their list ends on 31 December 2026, and no extension has been announced as of 27 October 2026. Russia’s extension to the end of 2027 was announced by China’s foreign ministry on 20 May 2026, so treat the cut-off as a hard date when you plan.

Count the 30 days of China visa-free entry from the day after arrival

The 30 days count from the day after entry and cannot be extended in advance. No source says what happens to a stay that is still running when the list ends, so I would keep the whole trip, including the return to Vietnam, inside 2026 and check the embassy page again before booking anything for late December.

What documents do officers expect at the Youyiguan gate?

Officers check the purpose of your trip and can refuse entry, so visa-free entry carries no guarantee. The embassy recommends carrying an invitation, air tickets and an accommodation reservation as proof of purpose, and it does not ask for a prior notice. For a land loop from Vietnam the realistic set is the list below.

Stack of passports on an officer’s desk
Passports on an officer's desk: what China visa-free entry documents get checked
  1. A passport valid for the whole stay.
  2. The confirmation of the Chinese arrival card, filled in on the immigration service website. It is free, online since 20 November 2025, and applies to land arrivals too.
  3. A printed accommodation booking for the first night in China.
  4. An onward or return ticket, printed, because phones lose signal at the gate.

The visa-free regime does not replace the arrival card. A QR code or a paper form works at the gate too, but of all these items the card is the one worth finishing the night before, because a form filled in on the spot takes time from a short working day.

Can you get back into Vietnam on the same day?

No rule in the sources blocks it, but no official document confirms a same-day loop through Youyiguan, and the sources show no rule on the interval between entries in either direction. Many travelers cross for exactly this reason: a trip into China and back gives a fresh Vietnam entry. For Russian passports the Vietnamese visa exemption restarts at 45 days with each new entry under Resolution 44/NQ-CP, valid until 14 March 2028. Other nationalities have different Vietnam rules, so check your own entry status first.

My own Hanoi loop through Huu Nghi takes about 15 hours: departure at 6:00 and a return near 21:00, with most of the time on the road.

The weak point is the return. If the Vietnamese officer doubts your status, the whole day is lost, and an e‑visa is the fallback. The portal rejects many foreign cards, and a wrong entry gate in the application costs a day. With BestBus Vietnam I take the e‑visa end to end, pay the fee on a card the portal accepts and choose the gate that matches your route. Message me on WhatsApp your entry date and I will tell you which gate fits.

My list of all 83 e‑visa entry gates shows where Huu Nghi stands among them.

How to decide: visa-free, an e‑visa fallback or another border?

A Russian, Belarusian or Kazakh passport holder with a booked room can treat visa-free as the main plan and keep an e‑visa as insurance on the way back. Holders of the other 48 passports should finish the trip before the end of 2026. US and Ukrainian passports sit outside the visa-free list, and a Laos route from Hanoi may suit them better, as my Laos versus China comparison shows.

The arrival card, the booking and the ticket take one evening, while the return timing and a spare visa are the parts I handle every week. Tell me the country on your passport and your travel dates and I will price a Hanoi departure for those days.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register my stay if I am not in a hotel?

Hotels register guests themselves. For other lodging, the immigration service describes registration within 24 hours of arrival, online across the country from 21 September 2026. Check its official site for the current procedure. We run this one start to finish — details on our Da Nang visa run page.

Is there a limit on how many times I can enter visa-free?

The embassy FAQ of 3 June 2026 sets no limit on entries or on total days. Each entry is judged again by the officer on the purpose of the trip.

Does the 240-hour transit work for a loop from Vietnam?

No. Transit needs a ticket to a third country, while Vietnam to China and back returns you to the same country. US and Ukrainian passports are on the transit list but fail this condition on a loop.

How long should my passport be valid?

The embassy FAQ asks for validity at least equal to your stay. Russian media quoting Chinese authorities mention a six-month margin, so a passport with margin is the safer choice.
